TSMC Digs Deep: A Chip Revolution Begins in Germany!

A New Chapter for Semiconductor Manufacturing

On August 20, 2024, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) held a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony for its first European fabrication facility in Dresden, Germany. This occasion was attended by notable leaders, including EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who both recognized the transformative potential of this initiative. Setting the stage for enhanced local chip production, TSMC's commitment to establishing a cutting-edge facility in Europe comes at a critical time when the need for reliable semiconductor supply chains has never been greater amid geopolitical uncertainties and rising global demand.

Investments and Collaboration for Success

The new facility is part of the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC), which TSMC leads with a remarkable 70% ownership stake. Renowned partners—Robert Bosch GmbH, Infineon Technologies AG, and NXP Semiconductors N.V.—each hold a 10% share. This ambitious project, with an anticipated investment exceeding €10 billion, benefits from a €5 billion state aid package from the European Union, all under the auspices of the European Chips Act. This legislative push aims to revitalize semiconductor production in Europe, encouraging innovation and supporting critical sectors like automotive manufacturing, which rely heavily on a stable supply of semiconductors.

Future-Oriented Capacity and Economic Empowerment

Expected to have a production capacity of 40,000 300mm wafers per month using TSMC’s advanced manufacturing technologies, the Dresden fab is set to create approximately 2,000 high-tech jobs, contributing substantially to the regional economy. This facility's opening comes as Europe aims to increase its share of global semiconductor production from under 10% to 20% by 2030, responding to persistent supply chain vulnerabilities. By strategically investing in local manufacturing, TSMC not only addresses immediate chip shortages but also fosters long-term technological advancements in semiconductor production, reinforcing Europe’s position as a key player in the global semiconductor industry.
