Overview

The Sahel: Terrorism's New Battleground

Situated in West Africa, the Sahel region has dramatically emerged as the epicentre of global terrorism. According to the Global Terrorism Index (GTI), this region accounts for more than half, astonishingly 3,885 out of 7,555, of all terrorism-related deaths worldwide. This alarming trend has surged nearly tenfold since 2019, fundamentally shifting the focus of extremist groups. It’s crucial to understand that the violence isn’t merely a statistic; it represents real lives lost and shattered families. Each death tells a story of loss and despair, reminding us of the urgency in addressing the factors leading to this devastating cycle of violence.

Political Instability Fuels the Flames of Terrorism

The surge in terrorism is deeply intertwined with political instability and ineffective governance in the Sahel. Dubbed the 'coup belt' of Africa, this region has been the site of numerous military coups, with six successful overthrows since 2020. Citizens initially viewed these military juntas as potential saviors; unfortunately, the reality is starkly different. Rather than restoring order, these regimes often exacerbate insecurity, failing to protect their citizens from growing violence. Many individuals find themselves in a desperate situation, where joining extremist groups appears to be the only viable option. This tragic choice highlights how chaos can lead individuals to aligned with groups that promise security, even at a great cost to peace and stability.

Illicit Economies: A Lifeline for Insurgents

In unraveling the mechanics of terrorism in the Sahel, one cannot ignore the crucial role played by illicit economies. Terrorist groups engage in various criminal activities, from kidnapping for ransom to drug trafficking, particularly cocaine smuggled from South America to Europe. This economic model not only sustains their operations but also further entrenches violence in the region. Remarkably, the Islamic State affiliate in the Sahel has doubled its territorial control in Mali due to the ongoing chaos and weak governance. Such examples illustrate how intertwined crime and terrorism have become; as long as these groups can profit from illegal activities, the crisis will only deepen. To truly understand and address the situation in the Sahel, one must acknowledge this unpleasant reality, recognizing that solutions must tackle both terrorism and the underlying criminal economies fueling it.
