In August 2024, the Lithuanian cultural center SODAS 2123 welcomes two outstanding Taiwanese artists, Juan Po-yuan and Jung Hsu, for a transformative two-month residency program. This initiative, funded partially by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture, comes from a collaborative effort involving the Taipei Representative Office in Germany and the Association of the Visual Arts in Taiwan (AVAT). The residency represents a unique platform for these artists to develop their practices within an international context, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and showcasing Taiwan's vibrant contemporary art scene on a global stage.
Juan Po-yuan delves into themes of online gaming and 3D visual art, addressing how digital environments shape LGBTQ+ identities and experiences. His approach not only reflects contemporary societal trends but also sheds light on the broader implications of technology in personal narratives. Meanwhile, Jung Hsu is recognized for her interactive and thought-provoking installations, such as 'Bi0film.net: Resist like bacteria,' which draw from social activism and engage viewers in a conversation about societal challenges. Together, their distinctive art forms are expected to resonate well with local audiences in Lithuania, promoting a deeper understanding of Taiwanese culture and social dynamics.
During their time at SODAS 2123, Juan and Hsu will not only create art but also collaborate with local artists, curators, and cultural practitioners through workshops, studio visits, and discussions. This immersive experience is designed to foster professional relationships and facilitate meaningful exchanges of ideas and techniques. Upon their return to Taiwan, both artists plan to host a sharing event to discuss their experiences and insights gained during the residency, which will serve as a springboard for further artistic collaborations between Taiwan and Lithuania. This initiative underscores the importance of cultural diplomacy and highlights the potential for art to serve as a bridge between diverse communities.
